American astronaut Sally Ride (1951-2012, third from right) and five other astronaut candidates pose for a picture in the crew systems laboratory at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) with the personnel rescue enclosure (PRE) or 'rescue ball' and an unoccupied Apollo EMU. Sally Ride was the first American woman in space and the third woman in space overall.
