European honey bee queen (left), drone (centre) and worker (right). European honey bees (Apis mellifera), also know as Western honey bees, are eusocial insects which live in large colonies. Each colony has a single fertile female (the queen), many normally non-reproductive females (workers), and a small proportion of fertile males (drones). Workers develop from fertilised eggs and drones develop from unfertilised eggs laid by the queen.
