Swiss-Belgian physicist Auguste Piccard (1884-1953, left) and his assistant Paul Kipfer (right), the first people to enter the stratosphere. They reached a record altitude of 15.781 metres on 27th May 1931 in a balloon and gondola designed by Piccard.
