Hughes printing telegraph. Historical illustration of the printing telegraph invented in 1855 by the British physicist David E. Hughes (1831-1900). It was the first telegraph to print text at both the sending and receiving end. This meant that there was no longer a need for codes such as Morse code. The apparatus was powered by a weight attached to the chain at bottom centre. Later models were powered by electricity.
