Hughes printing telegraph. Historical illustration of the printing telegraph invented in 1855 by the British physicist David E. Hughes (1831-1900). It was the first telegraph to print text at both the sending and receiving end. This meant that there was no longer a need for codes such as Morse code. The apparatus was powered by a weight attached to the chain at bottom centre. Later models were powered by electricity. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
