English astronomer Robert Hooke's (1635-1703) illustration of a micrometer published in Issue 29 of the Royal Society's scientific journal, Philosophical Transactions. This instrument was invented by William Gascoigne (1612-1644) and used to measure tiny angles through a telescope.
