Ernst Boris Chain (1906-1979), German-British biochemist. Chain is best known for purifying penicillin. He was awarded the 1945 Nobel prize for medicine or physiology alongside Sir Alexander Fleming and Sir Howard Walter Florey. Photographed in 1966.
