Tsetse fly larva melanization The tsetse fly (Glossina sp.) is a blood-sucking parasitic fly that is found in tropical Africa. It transmits Trypanosoma protozoa, which cause sleeping sickness in humans. The larva of the tsetse fly turns a darker colour (melanization) as it burrows underground, as is seen here (from right to left).
