World map, 15th century. This map was published in Germany in around 1480. It is oriented with east at top, and shows the four principal rivers of the world (Ganges, Pishon, Indus and Nile) emerging from Paradise (top) where Adam and Eve are depicted. Jerusalem is at centre, with a world-encircling ocean around the border along with classical windheads. The inset at lower left shows the elements of air, fire, earth and water. The inset at lower right shows a tripartite division between town, countryside and sea. This late-medieval map has been attributed to the German printer Hanns Rust.
