Self portrait of Augustin Hirschvogel (1503-1553), German artist, mathematician and cartographer. Hirschvogel is best known for making up to 300 etchings between 1543 and 1553. Some of these etchings were for book illustrations. He also made maps, including one used in the defence of Vienna against Turkish forces in 1543. A number of Hirschvogel's works were commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500-1558).
