Perseverance rover on Mars. At upper left is the SHERLOC (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals) instrument. It is a spectrometer that will use an ultraviolet laser to determine fine-scale mineralogy and to detect organic compounds on Mars. Perseverance was carried to Mars aboard the Mars 2020 spacecraft, which launched from Earth on 30th July 2020. The rover successfully touched down in Jezero Crater on 18th February 2021. It will study the geology of Mars and search for signs of life.
