Dual Hubble Space Telescope images of the fragmentation of comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS). The images were taken three days apart in 2020 and show around thirty fragments of the comet on the 20th April (left) and twenty five fragments on the 23rd April (right). The fragmentation may have been caused by the release of gas from the comet and the associated increase in centrifugal force on the comet. The comet was discovered in December 2019 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), an automated survey which monitors near Earth objects.
