Chandra X-ray telescope image of gas from the Cartwheel galaxy. Areas of hot gas (purple) are emitting X-rays. The gas is distributed over 150,000 light-years following a collision between the Cartwheel galaxy and a smaller galaxy. The Cartwheel galaxy (also known as PGC 2248 or ESO 350-40) has a complicated structure because of disturbances due to galactic collisions. The galaxy is located about 500 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Sculptor.
