Nurse draining excess fluid from around the lungs of a 76 year old female patient with lung cancer. The excess fluid is from a pleural effusion. This occurs when there is an accumulation of fluid in the spaces around the lungs. The fluid compresses the lungs, leading to breathing difficulties. Pleural effusions can be caused by heart failure, liver disease, lung infections and cancer.
