Circuit breaker, diagram. A circuit breaker breaks a circuit if a fault in an appliance causes too much current flow. A spring-loaded push switch on a soft iron bolt (brown) is held in the closed position by a spring, completing the circuit and allowing current to flow. If the current increases beyond a set limit, the electromagnetic core (inside the coil) pulls the bolt downwards, breaking the circuit.
