Rocket, illustration. A rocket obtains thrust from engine exhaust. The exhaust is created by the combustion of fuel with an oxidizer. In this case, the fuel is alcohol and the oxidizer is oxygen, both carried in tanks in the body of the rocket. Rocket engines thrust rockets forward by expelling exhaust in the opposite direction at high speed, and can therefore work in the vacuum of space.
