Female reproductive system, illustration. At upper centre is the uterus (womb), a hollow muscular organ. Either side of the uterus are the fallopian tubes (oviducts), which terminate at the ovaries (cream ovals). Every month one of the ovaries releases an egg (ovulation), which is received by the adjacent fallopian tube. The egg travels along the tube to the uterus, where, if fertilised, it will implant and grow. At the base of the uterus is the cervix, which opens into the vagina, the muscular birth canal.
