Light micrograph section through human liver tissue with hepatic schistosomiasis. It is probably the world's most prevalent chronic liver disease. It results from the host's granulomatous cell-mediated immune response to the soluble egg antigens of schistosoma mansoni, which progresses to irreversible fibrosis and, consequently, severe portal hypertension. Eggs remain viable in the liver for about 3 weeks.
