The centre of the thermogenic bloom of Dead Horse Arum, Helicodiceros muscivorus, showing the spadix emerging from the spathe. The picture shows the hairy flesh-coloured surface of the spathe; features that mimic animal skin. The spadix bears male and female florets in a hollow chamber at the base the spathe (behind the subject, not seen here). As the female florets become receptive, heat is generated inside the chamber, dispersing the putrid odour of the flower, which attracts blow flies. The flies push past the bristles on the spadix, and descend into the chamber, where they are trapped by hairs. The receptive female tissue will be fertilised by any fly that is carrying pollen. The following day, the male tissue releases pollen, the hairs wilt, and the flies can escape. These pollen-coated flies will then effect cross-pollination of any receptive female flowers they visit
