Ectopic pregnancy, illustration. In ectopic pregnancy the foetus grows outside of the uterus, often in the fallopian tubes. If the pregnancy goes undetected the fallopian tube will eventually burst, causing haemorrhaging into the mother's abdomen, which may be fatal. Surgery is performed to remove the foetus and repair or remove the fallopian tube.
