Qianmen 'Front Gate'; name for Zhengyangmen, a gate in Beijing's historic city wall. The gate is situated to the south of Tiananmen Square and once guarded the southern entry into the Inner City. Zhengyangmen was first built in 1419 during the Ming dynasty. After the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the Zhengyangmen gatehouse was occupied by the Beijing garrison of the People's Liberation Army. It was rebuilt in 2007.
