Polarised light micrograph of a cross section of mare's tail or common mare's tail (Hippuris vulgaris). It is an aquatic plant with normally grows with its roots in water and the leaves predominantly above the surface. The submerged leaves are much longer and softer than those located above the surface. The vascular bundle, typical of aquatic plants, is located in the centre of the stem.
