Polarised light micrograph of a longitudinal section of the fruit of the coffee plant (Coffea sp.) sometimes, incorrectly, referred to as a cherry'. The fruit is red or purple in colour and normally contains two seeds commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as beans. Under polarised light birefringent areas (pale blue) show up n the flesh of the fruit. The seeds are roasted, ground and brewed to produce the beverage coffee which has a high level of caffeine. The fruit is increasingly valued in its own right as a health product. It has a significantly lower caffeine content than the beans and is rich in antioxidants. It is also rich in chlorogenic acid which has been shown to help in lowering blood pressure. Fruit extract is also claimed to boost production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
