The Antikythera Youth, or Ephebe, was recovered from an ancient shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera. Sponge fishermen from Symi found the wreck in 1900. The wreck itself is dated to 1st c. BC, when commercial shipping and marine transport of works of art from the eastern Mediterranean to Italy had intensified. The youth has been variously interpreted as Apollo, 'Literate' Hermes holding a caduceus, and Heracles. Yet another interpretation identifies him as the Trojan hero Paris, holding the Apple of Discord in his extended right hand and the bow, a symbol of his killing of Achilles, in his left. The statue is widely regarded as dating to the decade 340 - 330 BC, and is on display at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
