Carbon-rich meteorite from Antarctica. This specimen is known as Grosvenor Mountains 95577 (GRO 95577), and was found in 1995 in Antarctica's Grosvenor Mountains. It was collected by the US Antarctic Search for Meteorites program (ANSMET). It has a mass of just over 106 grams, and is classified as a C2 or CR1 chondrite. It was analysed as part of a 2009 study that reported the discovery of an excess of the left-handed form of the amino acid isovaline in samples of meteorites that came from carbon-rich asteroids. This result has implications for the origin of the left-handed amino acids that form the basis of life on Earth.
