Leonor Michaelis (1874-1949), German biochemist, in his laboratory. Michaelis studied at Berlin University, qualifying as a doctor in 1896 and receiving his doctorate in 1897. He also worked in hospitals in Berlin and established a chemical laboratory. He was Professor of Biochemistry at Berlin University, Germany, from 1908 to 1922, when he moved to Japan where he worked at the University of Nagoya. In 1926, he moved to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, and then to the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research in New York City in 1929. He retired in 1941. Michaelis is most famous for his 1913 work on Michaelis-Menten kinetics, a model of enzyme kinetics.
