Elisabeth Daynes (born 1960), French sculptor, working on a reconstruction of an Australopithecus africanus head based on the 'Mrs Ples' specimen discovered in Sterkfontein, South Africa, in 1947. La Ferrassie, France. Dating from around 2 million years ago, it is not certain whether the skull is from a male or female. A. africanus is one of several extinct species forming an early part of the human evolutionary tree. Daynes is renowned for her reconstructions of early humans. She works closely with scientists to produce life-like and life sized sculptures, often with bones as her sole reference points. Her work is displayed in numerous museums around the world.
