Larval flying fish (Exocoetidae, top) and triggerfish (Balistidae, bottom) with magnified examples of the plastics (left) that the fish had ingested. These pieces of plastic are a similar size to the prey the fish would eat. The larval fish and plastics were found in areas of the ocean known as surface slicks. These are naturally-occurring smooth areas of water at the ocean surface. Surface slicks accumulate plankton and so attract larval fish that feed on plankton. They have also been shown to accumulate floating plastic, which the fish ingest along with their prey.
