Statue of a Man, 200-100 BC or later. This striding figure represents a very late development in Egyptian sculpture and a fascinating combination of old and new. In keeping with contemporary fashion, he is draped in a three-part costume consisting of a T-shirt, wraparound skirt, and shawl. Also new is the naturalistic rendering of the man's real hair, here accompanied by a full beard. Entirely traditional, however, are the striding pose, the use of a back pillar, and the way the curves of the body show through the tightly wrapped garments.
