Photographic portrait of Roger Charles Tichborne (or Arthur Orton), the son of Sir James and Lady Henrietta Felicite Seymour Tichborne. In 1859 he was presumed dead after his ship was lost at sea. In 1865, Australian newspapers informed his mother that her son was in fact still alive. The man who claimed to be her son was believed to be an imposter by the majority of the family, however his mother and a few individuals believed him. In 1868 an issue was directed to be tried in the Court of Common Pleas as to whether the claimant was the heir of Sir James. After the trial Arthur Orton, the man claiming to be Tichborne, was arrested for perjury and was tried at the Bar in 1873.
