Ireland; Co. Mayo; Clare Island: medieval painting (fresco) showing a dog (?) in Clare Island Abbey; offically St. Brigid`s Abbey (former Cistercian monastery). The Cistercian Abbey was found in 12th/13th century and extended ; in 1460. In 1224; it became a cell of Knockmoy Abbey; a Cistercian abbey near Tuam. The church of the Abbey is famous for its medieval wall and ceiling paintings (frescoes). These depict mythical; human and animal figures including dragons; a cockerel; stags; men on foot and on horseback; a harper; birds and trees. The frescoes were realized by two different painters in two different time phases. The Abbey is a national monument. In the 1990's many new images were found. These are a mixture of religious themes; everyday life and mythological creatures. The Abbey hosts as well numerous tombs of the once local ruling family; the ?M醝lle (O'Malley). Its tradition claims it as the site of baptism; marriages and burial of Gr醝nne (Grace) O'Malley (c. 1530 - c. 1603); the famous Irish pirate queen. It is believed that her body is in the O'Malley tomb with a canopy. Grace O'Malley (around 1530 - around 1603) is also known as Gr醝nne O'Malley; irish Gr醝nne N?Mh醝lle. She was Queen or lord of the ?M醝lle clan and dynasty and ruled western Ireland; following her father Eoghan Dubhdara ?M醝lle. She is also known as Gr醝nne Mhaol; anglicised Granuaile. Irish folklore knows her very well. She is also kwon as Gr醝nne O'Maly; Graney O'Mally; Granny ni Maille; Grany O'Mally; Grayn Ny Mayle; Grane ne Male; Grainy O'Maly; and Granee O'Maillie. But best known is Gr醝nne N?Mh醝lle. Today; Grace O`Malley is common. Grace became famous for radical disputes with Queen Elizabeth I whom she finally followed. Clare island has around 120 inhabitants.
