Ireland; Co. Sligo; sea bath Strandhill: Strandhill Golf Club (front) and in the back once sacred (holy) mountain Knocknarea; rising up 327 m above Sligo Bay. The impressive limestone hill is rising on the C鷌l Irra peninsula between Sligo Bay and Ballysadare Bay. Knocknarea is anglicized: "Knock"; in gaelic/irish means hill. The rest of the name is discussed: The irish name may be "Cnoc na Riabh" ("hill of the stripes"); "Cnoc na Riaghadh" ("hill of the executions"); "Cnoc na Riogha" ("hill of the kings"); or even "Cnoc na R? ("hill of the moon"). There is evidence of a neolithic passage tomb on the summit and mythology connects the mountain with pre-celtic and celtic legends. On hilltop; there is a cairn (55 m wide; 10 m high) called Queen Maeve`s Tomb; Medb's Cairn or irish "Miosg醤 M閍bh" (Maeve's lump of butter). The cairn; which may cover the megaltihic passage tomb; is the second biggest in Ireland. Bigger is the one in Br?na B骾nne complex in County Meath; only. There is strong evidence for a connection to the only 4 km off megalithic tomb cemetery of Carrowmore.
