Ireland; Co. Kerry; Ring of Kerry: bronze "Skellig Monks scultpure"; built 1995 by sculptor Eamon Doherty; in Caherciveen. The sculpture often is namened as well "St. Brendan the navigator voyage sculpture" or "St. Brendan the Navigator Monument"; but does not refer to the legendary Atlantic crossing by St. Brendan. it refers to the sailing of the monks to their monastery on island of Skellig Michael; in early Christian days. The monument shows four monks rowing in a boat with cross atop. The sculls (rudders) of the metal construction are extended and lift the boat towards heaven into the sky. The Augustine monastery on the island of Skellig Michael was started in 7th century AD and lasted until end of 12th century; starting 13th century; when the monks left and built a new monastery in Ballinskelligs. Ultimately; Skellig Michael and bere hive huts of the monastery on Skellig Michael became world famous as film location in Hollywood blockbusters Star Wars Epiosde VII and Star Wars Episode VIII. Skellig Michael is as well UNESCO world heritage site.
