Great Britain (United Kingdom); Northern Ireland; Belfast: peace mural "Women`s voices matter ... Equality for all"; realized 2015 in Lower Shankill city area. The mural was created by the Lower Shankill Women`s Group; most of these members living in the neighbourhood of the mural. Artist Lesley Cherry helped to realize it. The artwork replaces a paramilitary mural and another artwork showing the burning of Protestant homes when Troubles started. The mural is realized made as a patchwork quilt. It is installed only 50 m to right of the 2016 gable wall mural honoring UDA gunman Stephen McKreag (1970 - 2000) who is supposed having killed 12 people. Today; the quilt mural is; as being a peace mural; one of the most attractive sights in the protestant city quarter The Shankill. The city area called The Shankill got its name by famous Shankill Road and is thought to be one of the oldest Christian areas in Northern Ireland and Ireland. The name Shankill derives from gaelic "Sean cill"; meaning "old church". So; Shankill Road means Old Church Road. Militarization of the area took place in World War I (Great War); when lots of Shankill inhabitants became part of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) which was integrated in 36th Ulster Division of the British army and fought in the battle of the Somme; in July; 1916. Only 76 of 760 Shankill men returned home. Only one time; in 1932; protestant people of Shankill and rivals of catholic area Falls Road united when protests called for resistance against British government. In World War II; more than 100 people of Shanikill died during the Belfast Blitz; caused by the German Luftwaffe. Also due to the Troubles; population of Shankill reduced from 76;000 to 26;000 people; until 1990. Shankill has often been place of shootings and bomb attacks during the Troubles.
