F-8 Digital Fly-By-Wire display and keyboard from the 1970s. The first fly-by-wire systems were used in the Apollo lunar landers. The technology was later developed for use in aircraft and space shuttles. NASA modified an F-8C jet to be the new Digital Fly-By-Wire (DFBW) research aircraft. This display and keyboard (DSKY) was the same as used in the Apollo mission. It has warning lights at upper left, other displays at upper right, and a keyboard at bottom. As well as this control unit, the system included an inertial platform, a computer, and a cooling system. Photographed in 1996.
