Death wound of William the Conqueror, 1087. William the Conqueror (1028-1087), King of England, was the illegitimate son of Robert I, Duke of Normandy. As Duke of Normandy, William led the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. He was seriously injured in 1087 during a campaign to seize Mantes in France. He died a few days later in Rouen, and was buried in Caen. Artwork published in 1857.
