Matilda of Flanders (1031-1083), Queen of England and wife of William the Conqueror. Her husband William, as Duke of Normandy, led the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. She was related to the kings of France. They married in around 1051. Ten of their children survived to adulthood, including two future kings of England. After the conquest, she was crowned in England at Westminster Abbey and then returned to Normandy and governed the Duchy of Normandy in her husband's absence. Artwork published in 1857.
