'Jerusalem Delivered', 19th-century illustration. This scene of a Saracen warrior woman rescuing Christian lovers about to be burned at the stake illustrates an epic poem about the 11th-century First Crusade by Italian poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595). Tasso was an influential poet of the Italian Renaissance. His most important work (illustrated here) was 'Gerusalemme liberata' (1581, 'Jerusalem Delivered'). The poem consists of 20 sections (cantos). This scene is from the second canto, showing Clorinda on horseback, rescuing the Christian lovers Sofronia and Olindo. Artwork published in Paris in 1810.
