'Hoisting the British flag at Pretoria: Lord Roberts Leading Cheers for the Queen', 1900, (1901). British soldier Frederick Sleigh Roberts (1832-1914) fought the Boers in South Africa, 1899-1900. He led British forces in the capture of Pretoria, capital of the Transvaal, on 31 May 1900. Here he raises his hat as his troops cheer Queen Victoria.
