British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee (born 1955) at the CERN Computer Centre. Berners-Lee studied at Oxford University. After working in industry he moved to CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. There he developed the World Wide Web, a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents. Berners-Lee was knighted in 2004.
