Tympanum, St Augustine's Church, Front Street, Alston, Cumbria, c1955-c1980. A detailed view of the tympanum above the south porch, situated at the base of the west tower of the church. The church was built in 1870 by JW Walton to replace a 1770 church by Smeaton on a medieval site. It was constructed with ashlar and has a south porch at the base of a three stage tower, four bay nave with south aisle and a smaller chancel. Above the two doors in the porch is a tympanum set within a pointed arch, and has a central oval panel with a seated figure of Christ, surrounded by four panels with heraldic figures.
