'William Pitt Amherst, Earl Amherst', early 19th century. Portrait of William Pitt Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst (1773-1857). Governor-general of India. Amherst was sent as Ambassador to China in 1816, but as he refused to perform the ceremony of kow-tow, which Europeans considered degrading, he was not permitted to enter Peking. Pitt was Governor-General of India from 1823-1828, and was created Earl Amherst of Arakan in 1826. [Fisher, Son & Co., London]
