'Manchu Funerals'. Thomson writes that Manchus, like the Chinese, make extensive preparation for their own funeral, selecting wood for the coffin and the clothes to be worn. The canopy covering the coffin is white, as are the clothes of all the mourners. These are bannermen, hired to take part in funeral processions. 'They are commonly beggars dressed up by the undertaker'.
