The North East tradition of growing leeks and other large vegetables has its roots (pardon the pun) in the region's mining heritage, when it offered pitmen a welcome hobby out in the fresh air. In recent years, there has been a decline in leek shows, once a vibrant part of North Eastern heritage and community.
