Photograph: Commando Battle School Army Invaders Test Under Barrage of Live Ammunition. Army training in this country has become more realistic than ever in urgent preparation for forthcoming offensives. Remarkable exercises are carried out at a weapon-training school in the Southern Command. The idea is to accustom soldiers to conditions as near as possible to actual combat. Skilled marksmen are employed as defenders to ensure that the fire goes overhead or falls short to avoid casualties. Commandos using only single ropes, scale a cliff which is over 100 ft in height, wearing necessary battle equipment - steel helmets, rifles and ammunition. This is part of the tough Assault Course to fit our modern Army to face any odds. Shows Commandos in battle dress climbing a 100 ft cliff with a single rope. KY. 51310. One of 37 British Official photographs, nd. Mounted on card with original associated typescript captions. Covering aspects of the preparations for and liberation of North West Europe, 1944-1945, including D-Day, 1944, and the Rhine Crossings, 1945.
