Photograph: Gift from our Indian Empire. Calcutta ambulance cars. From an album of 76 official photographs, 1916-1917. Associated with World War One, Western Front (1914-1918). Ambulances were donated to the war effort from across the British Empire. Wealthy individuals, businesses, trade unions, charities, hunts, worshipful companies, churches and many others paid for ambulances. Manufacturers of ambulances included Rolls-Royce, Daimler, Albion, Morris, Vulcan, Austin, Sunbeam-Rover, Wolseley, Siddeley-Deasy, Renault, Buick, Crossley, Vauxhall, Argyll, Sunbeam, Lanchester, Ford Model T, Fiat and Star.
