Hand-coloured engraving depicting the Observatory in Richmond Gardens. The Observatory was designed by Sir William Chambers for King George III (1760-1820) and finished in 1769, allowing the King to pursue his interest in astronomy. It was from here that George III viewed the transit of Venus in 1769
