In 1819 he purchased a captaincy in the 22nd Light Dragoons but the following year the regiment was disbanded and he went on to half pay. He succeeded his father as 3rd Baronet in 1821 and shortly afterwards assumed the additional surname of Scott, having married Hannah-Charlotte Scott, daughter and heir to Henry Scott. The portrait was begun by Raeburn, but he probably abandoned the painting when Douglas transferred regiment in 1819. It remained unfinished on the artist's death in 1823, but was probably completed by a pupil shortly after.
