Photograph: Paratroops in action with 3 in mortars firing on enemy positions across the Rhine.Taken by Sgt D M Smith, Army Film and Photographic Unit, Arnhem, 20 Sep 1944.From a collection of 75 British official photographs and photocopy papers relating to 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden, September 1944.Belonged to the late Christopher Keegan who served in the Parachute Regiment.Associated with Operation MARKET GARDEN, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945) 1944.A 3-inch mortar team of the 1st (Airlanding) Battalion, The Border Regiment, bombarding enemy positions. The crew (from left to right) are Privates Norman ?Jock? Knight (obscured) and Ron ?Ginger Tierney (facing camera), and Corporal Jim McDowell. All three were safely evacuated from Arnhem though Knight was wounded.
