Reg Bendell, a radiologist at Bexhill Hospital, East Sussex. He was one of the few survivors when HMS Royal Oak, a British Revenge-class battleship, was torpedoed by a German U-boat at Scapa Flow on 14 October 1939, resulting in 833 deaths. Reg was blown from the depth of the upturned vessel by an air bubble. The wreck is now a designated war grave, and an annual ceremony is held to mark the loss.
