Horseguards Parade, on the east side of St James's Park, was once the site of the tilt yard of Whitehall Palace where jousting tournaments and bear-baiting were enacted. Since the seventeenth century reviews, medal presentations and parades, including the Trooping of the Colour, have taken place here.
